Our client is a specialist growers of quality hardy nursery stock for the garden centre industry. They produce high quality shrubs and conifers for the garden centre and landscaping industries offering over 150 varieties grown in various pot sizes. Built from scratch they have employed the latest technology to produce plants on the 30 acre site with 5 acres of greenhouses.
Job Description:
Our client is seeking a proactive and experienced Nursery manager to lead the daily operations of a busy horticultural nursery. In this hands-on role, you will be responsible for managing and coordinating a team of up to 15 staff, ensuring that all areas of the business run smoothly, efficiently, and cost-effectively. You will play a central role in daily planning, team leadership, and ensuring the timely dispatch of orders and receipt of deliveries, while maintaining the overall upkeep of the nursery site and production.
This position is ideal for someone currently in a managerial role within a garden centre or horticultural environment who is looking to move into a more operationally focused role with less customer interaction. Regular communication with the business owner, who is based abroad, will be an important part of this role, requiring clear and reliable updates on daily business performance and key operational matters.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead, supervise, and motivate a team across all areas of the nursery to maintain a positive and productive working environment.
- Oversee the daily dispatch and loading of orders, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and efficiency.
- Manage incoming deliveries and oversee stock control to minimize waste and ensure stock availability.
- Coordinate site maintenance, equipment upkeep, and general facilities management.
- Foster a culture of safety, cleanliness, and operational excellence across the site.
- Communicate effectively with the business owner overseas to report on business performance and operational matters.
- Maintain a strong focus on cost-effective practices and continuous improvement of workflow efficiency.
Key Skills & Requirements:
- Proven experience in staff management and operational leadership within a horticultural, garden centre, or similar setting.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to priorities and manage multiple tasks.
- Hands-on, practical approach with a focus on team productivity and business efficiency.
- Excellent communication skills, particularly in reporting and liaising remotely with the business owner.
