With more than 60 years’ experience in the sector, is a horticulture wholesale nursery producing over 2.2 million shrubs, herbaceous and perennial plants per year across their production sites. They have now grown to become one of the leading suppliers to the British landscaping industry. The company is known for its forward-thinking ethos which has allowed them to stay ahead of landscape fashions and trends and become pioneers in plant health management and environmental expertise. Their clients include a wide range of commercial and domestic customers including landscape architects and designers, local authorities, housing projects and nurseries. They are now expanding their operation into Scotland and require a hands-on Horticultural manager to help develop their 21-acre site.
This is a unique opportunity for the right person to be instrumental in the set up and establishment of this standalone production nursery at a critical stage in the company’s overall development. Although reporting to the Production Director and having the full support of the senior management team, As Horticultural Site Manager of a remote subsidiary site you will need to operate in a self-contained manner. Key responsibilities will include
-To lead the phased development of the nursery infrastructure over the next 4- 6 years.
-Delivering site development to specification and within budget.
-Appoint and manage external contractors as required.
-Recruitment of local staff, ensuring their development and productivity.
-Ensure the Health & Safety of the site and all its operations, following company policies and procedures.
-To produce containerised trees, hedging and shrubs to required specifications, quantities, and deadlines.
-Provide for the cultural requirements of the growing crop.
-Provide regular and comprehensive feedback.
-Liaison with the main site team to ensure smooth logistical operations.
This is a hands-on role, and will require a candidate with horticultural, agricultural or forestry experience at a high level. Attributes required:
-A professional horticulturalist, preferably with experience of growing hardy ornamental nursery stock and/or containerised trees.
-Good project management skills.
-Ability to turn hand to anything.
-Enthusiastic, practical, and driven to succeed.
-A team player yet independent thinker.
-Good organisational and IT skills.
-Excellent communication and staff management skills.
-Innovative and creative in decision making and problem-solving.
-Full driving licence.
-Forklift license preferred.
The successful candidate will be required to spend the first 8-12 weeks in the role based at the client’s main site in Shropshire to understand how the company operates and to undergo in house training for the role. For this, on site accommodation will be provided to the candidate.
