An opportunity has arisen for an experienced and competent Head Gardener to maintain a historic private estate located near St Andrews in Scotland, to a high standard throughout the year, as well as helping to shape the future of the gardens as part of long-term planning.
The established gardens extend to 16 acres and comprise of formal areas including lawns, mature yew hedging, mixed shrub planting, herbaceous borders, ponds and planted pathways. A heated greenhouse and cold frames are used for propagation. This role also encompasses the care and maintenance of all the estates house plants. The Head Gardener is a key position and the person appointed will be responsible for ensuring that all areas are maintained to the highest horticultural standards in order to preserve its unique character for the benefit of the family and visitors.
In addition to maintaining and developing all areas of the formal gardens, hedging and surrounding grounds, the successful candidate will work closely with the family to develop and deliver new projects that will enhance the historical beauty and function of the garden. They will also be required to plan and implement both short and long-term maintenance programmes and planting schedules, as well as conducting guided tours of the garden, including any other formal visits. This role will feature the supervision of a full-time gardener and season volunteers, ensuring that health and safety measures are followed, all machinery is serviced and in good condition and all garden infrastructure is maintained.
Candidates should have a minimum of 3 years proven experience at head gardener level, within a private estate or a horticulturally diverse public garden. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate excellent plant knowledge and technical skill through proven academic horticultural qualification or experience. Practical experience or certification with a wide range of garden machinery such as strimmers, lawnmowers, hedge trimmers and chainsaws is essential for this position with chemical spraying certificates (PA1/6) being desirable.
This role comes with a 2-bedroom cottage, which is a 20-minute drive from St Andrews, with the council tax being paid for as part of the package however, the candidate will be responsible for all other utilities. A full, clean UK driving license is essential for this position.
