A rare and exciting opportunity has become available for a keen and dynamic person with horticulture and gardening experience, who can take over from the existing gardener and further develop the gardens. The post is a full time and permanent position to continue to grow develop the walled garden and nursery onsite and occasional input to a small garden around the main house.
The Estate Walled Garden and Nursery has built up to be a successful local business. The walled garden is some 2.5 acres with apple orchard, a number of fruit trees along the walls, a greenhouse and 4 small polytunnels. Outside the garden there are offices, a greenhouse, and polytunnels. In the Spring a large number of bedding plants are sold to the public, local shops and for use in hanging baskets to fulfil contracts with neighbouring towns.
Strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries, black currents and tomatoes are grown for sale. One outlet being the Estate’s Café. There are plans to make the garden a wedding venue, hence flower beds will be renewed. Recent improvements include the installation of automatic watering in greenhouses and polytunnels.
The Estate has a farm in hand, a sawmill and forestry operation and two hydro stations. During the last ten years the Estate has diversified into tourism with the Salmon Viewing Centre, which also contains a Lockbox facility selling eggs and garden produce. The Cafe, owned by the Estate, but let to a tenant, attracts a large number of visitors, many of whom come to the gardens. Estate staff assist as required.
As well as a part time employee, who works mainly in the walled garden, we also have several volunteers, who give of their time, to assist the head gardener.
The ideal candidate will have a horticultural qualification or experience working on diverse garden. Experience in growing fruit, vegetables and cut flowers is essential for the role as well as greenhouse / polytunnel management ad propagation.
Remuneration will be paid in accordance with experience and a three-bedroom house is available, rent free, for the successful candidate. Partners, children and pets (within reason) are welcome. Council tax and bills will be the tenant’s responsibility.
This is an exciting opportunity for a horticulturalist looking for an opportunity to work closely with the owners and have creative input into expanding and diversifying the garden business and nursery. Â
SALARY:       £30,000 – 35,000 depending on experience
