Assistant Gardener required

An excellent opportunity has arisen on a private estate in Surrey, for an Assistant Gardener to focus on the general maintenance aspects of the 12-acre garden, under the direction of a very talented and knowledgeable Head Gardener.  This role would suit a physically fit and experienced gardener with excellent attention to detail and a desire to take on a full-time permanent role on a stunning private estate. There is scope for modernising and developing the garden, therefore candidates with thoughts and ideas with regards to improving the garden are welcome.

The mature 12-acre private garden is situated approximately 1.5 miles from Haslemere train station and comprises expansive lawns, mixed herbaceous and shrub borders, a natural pond and associated planting, a collection of rhododendrons, azalea, and camellia. Also, within the historic garden is a mature pinetum with an impressive selection of native and exotic trees including conifers, sequoias, mature pines and much more. A truly impressive collection of trees with at least 20 champion trees which are recognised by The Tree Register.  The gardens also once featured 1920’s Gertrude Jekyll rock garden and hot border, of which the backbone of the original design still remains. Surrounding the house is a variety of grasses with mixed herbaceous. They are trying to modernise the area around the house going down to the existing garden to blend in with the existing mature garden. There is also a greenhouse which is used for propagating when required and storing plants for container displays.

Applicants for this position should be able to demonstrate experience and competence in garden maintenance tasks such as hedge cutting, lawn care/mowing, weed control, basic pruning techniques, and the safe operation of a range of garden tools and machinery.  Spray certificates (PA1/PA6) and chainsaw certificates are desirable but are not essential.  The successful applicant will report to the Head Gardener and will complete the small team of three, currently comprising the Head Gardener and one Assistant Gardener.

Applicants for this position should have experience in each of the above areas and must be flexible and helpful in their approach to private estate gardening. The grounds and gardens contain steep terrain; therefore candidates must be physically fit and happy to work outside in all weathers. Working hours are Monday to Friday, 08:00 – 17:00 with a 1-hour lunch break and additional morning break.  The position is offered with 20-days holiday per annum plus Bank Holidays. Candidates must live within commuting distance of the property as accommodation is not provided.
