The Company:

Our client is developing its brand-new garden centre and restaurant which is due to be operational running during the Spring of 2020.  Currently being built, the garden centre will create a location and environment for visitors to Southend to shop, indulge, visit, enjoy and relax.  This new build is looking to recruit an experienced Horticulture and Patio Manager.  Delivering on the job description, the role will suit someone who wants to play a major part as part of the management team in the centre’s development, growth and strategy.  This is no ordinary garden centre departmental role, they are looking for someone who ticks all the boxes, with a real passion, with the opportunity to inject their own personality into the department.

The garden centre has a strong plants base, built over the years by its original nursery and this is supported by a brand-new restaurant due to open in August 2020, a large gardening and patio/landscape range, and a very strong pet influence with their own brand pet shop.   

The Horticulture and Patio Manager will be responsible for the plant, nursery and patio parts of the business, whilst also supporting the management team and the combined retail team across the whole centre as a duty manager.  They will also be responsible for their departmental turnover and margins, control of the department’s overhead budget lines and managing purchases.

Job Description:

Financial Performance: 

  • Supports Company in building budgets and targets.
  • Drives sales to achieve budgets and targets.
  • Takes ownership and responsibility for managing all areas of profit, loss and controllable costs within their department.
  • Implements appropriate measures to control costs and increase turnover.
  • Works with the management team to ensure staff schedules manage the payroll costs effectively and flexibly by monitoring wage costs vs turnover on a weekly basis to achieve garden centre and departmental budget payroll.
  • Is responsible for buying and selection of the range throughout the plants and patio departments.
  • Controls stock levels effectively throughout their departments to maximise sales whilst managing wastage costs in line with expected gross margin targets.
  • Ensures that correct margins are implemented as per budget
  • Supportive of indoor manager with being responsible for cash management and banking procedures throughout the centre.

Leading a Team:

  • Leads by example and promotes effective team working.
  • Inspires, motivates, and develops the team to optimise individual performance.
  • Demonstrate an enthusiastic, proactive and flexible approach motivating team ownership and care.
  • Ensures performance and attendance issues are managed fairly and consistently, in line with company policy (Bradford factor).
  • Communicates with the team effectively.
  • Ensures all retail staff complete the induction programme.
  • Ensures all colleagues are trained on all processes and procedures relevant to their job role to support service, standards and health and safety.


  • Ensures stock processes are in place to maintain margin expectations.
  • Completes departmental and garden centre stocktake alongside the management team.
  • Communicates effectively throughout the garden centre staff.
  • Communicates information regarding compliance effectively as required.
  • Carries out any other duties that may be outside the standard remit, that will benefit the Company as a whole.
  • Responsible for working with the Management in issuing and managing key holding duties, including themselves.
  • Undertakes appropriate training/coaching deemed relevant for the role.
  • Demonstrating brand values of Passion, Inspiration and Expertise.

Customer Experience:

  • Leads from the front in driving the highest standard of customer service to ensure it is consistently achieved.
  • Review customer experience given by the team and provide ongoing training and coaching.
  • Resolves customer complaints effectively and in a timely manner.
  • Provide relevant training and support to colleagues to inspire them to achieve targets and deliver an excellent customer service experience, including for continuous improvements.
  • Works with the management team to ensure staff schedules/rotas fall in line with sales trends to achieve targets and maintain excellent customer service.

Health, Safety, Hygiene and Compliance:

  • Over aching responsibility for the health and safety within the plants and patio departments, including managing and monitoring compliance to Health & Safety Legislation, Policy and Procedures throughout the garden centre (Training to be provided where identified).
  • Ensure that team members have full understanding of their role in health and safety, the Health and Safety at Work Act and procedures and ensure that any changes to practices are fully communicated
  • Ensure the accidents are logged and that preventative measures are actioned as required.

Candidate requirements:

  • Leads from the front
  • Set the standard for service across all departments
  • Commercially aware to drive and make changes to increase sales
  • Experience horticulturist within a garden centre environment.
  • Shows examples for responsibility for achieving targets and results
  • Has product buying and negotiation experience
  • Create and maintain an outstanding shopping experience for customers
  • Operationally strong to duty manage in a diverse role
  • Ensure high Visual standards at all times
  • IT literate, with capability to use EPOS systems
  • Experience in legislative and business standards and procedures e.g. licensing law, health and safety and cash management knowledge plus the administration required to ensure compliance.
  • Will show experience in being accountable for processes, compliance, management and overhead control, including ordering, pricing, cash management, HR and health & safety.

It will be important for the garden centre team to work together to maximise sales and control costs to enable it to establish itself efficiently, with the Horticulture Manager being a core driver of this.  Strong leadership, communication, teamwork and sharing responsibility will be essential to make this work for the garden centre.

Management will be required to work a minimum of alternate weekends.
