From English Country Gardeners

Alternative Text

An exciting opportunity for an experienced Head Gardener who is required to manage the garden and grounds of a large private house and country hotel on the Isle of Sark. These two properties are joined by 4 acres of landscaped grounds including a large proportion of vegetable garden and orchard and are open to the public. There is also about 80 acres of grazed pasture.

The hotel grounds consist mainly of lawns and shrubbery beds with some seasonal planting. The house grounds consist of lawns and borders but also an organic raised bed vegetable garden, one large and one small greenhouse, mixed fruit orchard, large circular vegetable and cut flower garden managed organically that incorporates permaculture and biodynamic ideas, wild woodland and large chicken pen. The remaining 80 acres of farmland consists of grassland paddocks for the grazing of horses and sheep.

Applications are sought from experienced and knowledgeable gardeners who have the enthusiasm and motivation to lead a small team of local part-time and seasonal workers whilst working within a larger network of different roles. The role will involve heading up a team of three and being responsible for the care of all the garden and grounds on the property, liaising with the facilities and maintenance manager for the hotel and the owners, and working closely with the Head Chef to grow and supply a continual large variety of vegetables to the hotel kitchens.

The gardens are visited by groups with Guernsey and RHS affiliated tour guides as part of their Sark/Guernsey tours and also on a regular basis by hotel and island visitors.

The applicant should be polite and personable and able to give interesting and informative tours of the gardens from time to time.

You should have the commitment and desire to be hands on in all aspects of the garden and have excellent communication skills. You will be expected to have a horticultural qualification and suitable experience in a previous role combined with good plant and cultivation knowledge, especially in fruit and vegetable production, be committed to caring for wildlife and embrace the owners’ holistic approach to gardening.   In addition, you will need to be organised and tidy and have the ability to plan daily workloads and longer-term vegetable production targets.

There is scope for further improvement and development of the gardens and therefore for applicants with flair and imagination this could be a really rewarding role.

The working week will be 48hours/week for 6 days with 4 weeks holiday/year.
