Head Gardener – EC9533

From English Country Gardeners

An incredible opportunity has arisen for a Head Gardener with design, implementation and development experience to create a beautiful heritage orchard and kitchen garden on the edge of Bristol. This exciting project will be on a two-year contract full time with accommodation provided.

The site was a 14th century dairy farm and orchard converted into a 1950s 5-bed farmhouse with about 2 acres of grass.  The new owners have a vision to create 4 eco-homes sharing a beautiful working garden.  They wish to explore ideas for a heritage orchard with mixed fruit trees, walled garden with trellis fruit, automated greenhouse providing fresh produce. They are motivated by eco-friendly approaches to reduce maintenance and increase biodiversity, family engagement with child-friendly environment, preserving native wildflower & wildlife habitat, robustness to climate change.

The Head Gardener will work closely with the owners and architects to create a 2-year plan for the garden in line with their aspirations and implement the plan to create an extraordinary garden. There will be contractors and landscapers (for the hard landscaping) working onsite. The successful applicant will have good communications skills and ability to work alongside other staff. He / She will be very hands on in their role, organised and able to plan and prioritise the workload.

Applicants will ideally have a minimum level 2 horticultural qualification combined with excellent plant and tree knowledge as well as experience with developing gardens. Experience with implementing a kitchen garden and growing fruit and vegetables is essential. The ability to operate a wide range of garden machinery and good craft skills are also desired for the role.

The Head Gardener will be provided with a budget to source plants, garden machinery and any equipment required hence prior budget management experience is required.

The property onsite, a 5-bedroom farmhouse, will be available for sole occupancy of the Head Gardener to live in for the first year. But as construction starts in second year, the Head Gardener will likely be required to move to temporary accommodation onsite. Accommodation will be provided for the full two years of the contract with council tax and water & electricity bills covered by the employer.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a driven and knowledgeable Head Gardener with a creative flair and prior experience developing gardens to put their name to the creation of a beautiful garden.
