A hard-working, committed, reliable, competent and fit experienced gardener required to maintain mature historic garden.
Finlaystone Estate by the river Clyde has 10 acres of gardens which are open to the public. Key features are the extensive sloping lawns overlooking the Clyde, an array of Rhododendron and azalias, trees and shrubs, a long herbaceous border and a walled garden with a variety of fruit and vegetables and decorative planting.
The right person can maintain this with some volunteer help and guidance and support from the owner.
Key attributes will ideally be:
Solid horticultural experience plus desire to learn more. Experience in a similar setting to cope with all tasks needed to maintain a mature garden
Reliable timekeeper
Ability to work alone with good initiative (ie light management from the owner)
Need to be fit to do a range of tasks including heavy work, hedge cutting, strimming, mowing, pruning, planting , mulching, spraying, composting. Understanding of plants, vegetables, fruit, trees, shrubs, greenhouse propagation and lawn care.
Competent to use and look after range of garden machinery
Ideally holds a PA1/PA6 knapsack spraying certificate
Candidates without the full range of experience will be considered if they have the right general background and attitude.
Remuneration will depend on experience. There will be some seasonality in the hours worked.
