Garden and Grounds Maintenance Manager required

Our client offers a professional landscaping and domestic or commercial grounds maintenance contracting service throughout the South East of England.  They have been established for over 35 years, and their maintenance work ranges from private customers through to large maintenance contracts for commercial clients.  They also look after many Local Authorities and Parish Councils across Surrey, Berkshire, Hampshire and Buckinghamshire.

They currently have a requirement for a Garden and Grounds Maintenance Manager to support the Managing Director with these works.

Job description

The role encompasses all tasks and responsibilities for the day to day running and organisation of the grounds & garden maintenance teams, ensuring all work is completed on time in a professional manner, to a high horticultural standard and that the teams have the tools, materials and knowledge to do so.

Occasional hands on works with teams will be required during seasonal peaks.  It is a position where organisational skills, financial awareness, staff and self-motivation and management along with horticultural knowledge are key.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operational day to day management of garden and grounds teams
  • Monthly work schedule, planning and delivery
  • Monitoring of sites and ensuring sites are up to standard
  • Supervision of one off and garden maintenance jobs
  • Staff daily management (sick cover of staff, holidays, initial discipline, planning & organisation)
  • Hiring new staff
  • Client management and liaison
  • Site appraisals and extra work recommendations
  • Basic quotes for existing clients and one-off works
  • Machinery management, service, repairs and checks.
  • Vehicle management, servicing, staff care of, driving care/standards
  • Small hand tools & garden sundries purchasing
  • Planning and execution of personal workload to ensure all responsibilities are fulfilled.
  • Completion of any additional management tasks given by line manager
  • Team paper work completion and compilation (timesheets, vehicle/tool check sheets, job sheets, site visit sheets)
  • Hands on maintenance work as required to show staff how to work, teach skills and generally motivate or cover on occasions and on difficult technical jobs
  • To work with other business operations not directly managed to maximise staff use, get work done wherever possible and best utilise the skill base within the business.
Key Skills
  • Good horticultural knowledge
  • Excellent management and organisational skills
  • Thorough knowledge of grounds and garden maintenance
  • The ability to lead by example and teach junior staff members
  • Good knowledge of garden maintenance machinery and equipment
  • Competence in paperwork and record keeping
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Horticultural qualification
  • PA1 and PA6 spraying certificates
