Experienced Gardener required in North Oxfordshire

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced and passionate gardener to showcase their skills on a prestigious Tom Stuart Smith garden in Oxfordshire.  The 74 acre property contains beautiful gardens, including a woodland garden for which the successful candidate will be responsible.  The position would suit a knowledgeable gardener with good plant knowledge and excellent attention to detail.  Applicants will ideally have at least five years’ experience working on private estate gardens, though less experienced gardeners will also be considered.

The historic 74 acre property boasts an arboretum and surrounding parkland with two large lakes, a lake garden, sunken garden, woodland and a woodland garden.  A 2 acre walled garden and extensive herbaceous borders are also managed by the team of nine gardeners, under the management of the Head Gardener.  The gardens are maintained to the highest standard and as such, applicants should be able to demonstrate impeccable attention to detail and a genuine passion for horticulture.

The successful applicant will have sole responsibility for the newly-designed two acre woodland garden; a classic Tom Stuart Smith design containing 23,000 perennials, 40,000 bulbs and a variety of species (rodgersia, selinum, iris, eupatorium, thalictrum, epimedium, ferns, euphorbia, grasses, gallium, aster and many others).  The role will require a good plants person to ensure plant maintenance and health via feeding, weeding, mulching and general upkeep to the highest standard.

This is a hands-on role, so you must be physically fit and able to work for long periods on your own when required, and be able to prioritise your workload.  In return for your commitment and dedication, a generous salary is offered as well as a pension scheme and discretionary bonus.  This is a fantastic opportunity for a hard-working and enthusiastic gardener to be part of a close-knit team on a very prestigious estate on a permanent full-time basis.

Summer hours of work are 08:00 – 17:00 Monday to Thursday, and 08:00 – 16:00 on Friday between March and November.  Winter hours are 08:00 – 16:00 between November and March.
