The client is one of the UKs leading and largest online tree suppliers with over 20 years of industry experience. They are looking to recruit an experienced Plant Buyer to join the existing Senior Management Team. Reporting to and working alongside the Managing Director, the successful candidate will have sole responsibility for buying, managing the process throughout from building relationships with suppliers to expanding product ranges and negotiating the best deals.

Business Skills and Duties:

  • Highly commercial experienced buyer with horticulture experience, ideally with non-tree plants and hard goods categories.
  • E-commerce experience is preferred, but not essential.
  • Systems literate and able to support applications rollout such as supplier portals.
  • Supporting the sale of both stocked and drop-shipped products.
  • Buy price and terms negotiation, forecasting and reserves commitments.
  • Sales price monitoring and price setting.
  • Stock responsibility.
  • Promotion planning.
  • Marketing support.

Goals:

  • Short term priority: understand existing range and suppliers and provide immediate support.
  • Medium Term (but still in 2024): develop new range plans, bring suppliers on board and support launch of products on the website.

Additional Information:

The company is a small business comprised of a team who are highly motivated individuals, therefore they are seeking an individual with a similar attitude to work, an understanding of profits and a passion for both horticulture and the delivery of excellent customer service.  The client is willing to support remote working and therefore expect applicants to be self-motivated and independent individuals. Excellent communications skills will be key for this vacancy, in order to engage effectively with suppliers and the existing team.

Applicants will require a full driving license, due to the travel requirements of meeting suppliers, with expenses covered by the employer. Holiday allowance is a generous 25 Days plus Bank Holidays.

We’re looking for someone with good communications skills, who’s prepared to work outside in all weathers, alone or as part of a team, who is physically fit able to operate a range of garden machinery.

Our perfect candidate will have experience of plant propagation and nursery work.  They will also  have all the requisite skills and experience of renovation, seasonal pruning, maintenance and training of fruit trees, roses and climbing plants.

Key components of this role include: Planting, plant maintenance & weeding; formative pruning shrubs and young trees; the care of mature trees; hedge cutting & topiary; pesticide & weed control spraying; lawn mowing - pedestrian & ride-on; strimming and leaf collection.

The successful candidate will be required to safely and competently use a range of petrol/electric tools and machinery, including; various sized tractors/loaders; pedestrian & ride-on mowers; strimmers; hedge trimmers; leaf blowers and pressure washers. Any licences held for the use of this equipment is desirable but not essential. A current PA1/PA6 is required.

To ensure the preservation of our high horticultural standards and the most memorable guest experience it is essential that you have a minimum Level 2 horticultural qualification and time served experience in a garden open to the public. You will need to be organised, able to plan and prioritise your workload.

Bowcliffe is a busy, year-round estate, with tenants, guests and visitors using the grounds and ornamental gardens whatever the weather. We don’t close over winter. We are responsible for minimising potential risks to the public by undertaking daily health & safety checks within the ornamental garden and grounds, and taking appropriate action to resolve any issues.

We are seeking a person with a ‘can do’ flexible attitude to all tasks, be they garden related or helping support others working within the business, such as Maintenance and Hospitality. At Bowcliffe we are all on the same team.
