An exciting new vacancy has become available for an experienced sole gardener to take on the responsibility of maintaining and developing the formal gardens and grounds surrounding this beautiful Edwardian property located in a rural location near Solihull. The estate covers an area of approximately 10 acres of which 4 acres are to be maintained as formal gardens.  This role would suit someone with experience maintaining gardens within a private estate, along with the creativity and confidence to further develop the gardens in line with the vision of the client.

Currently the gardens contain mature mixed perennial borders, formal lawns, formally clipped hedging, new kitchen garden, as well as recently planted borders and statement beds. The owners are very much open to candidates who are keen to make their own stamp on the gardens and encourage input with regards to any future development. The Sole Gardener will have a hands-on role in the daily care and continuous development of the garden.

The ideal candidate will have an academic horticultural qualification and at least 3 years’ experience working within a private estate. This is an excellent opportunity and would suit someone with a vision for maintaining and enhancing the garden as required. There is a range of garden machinery available for use and the gardener will have the ability to operate and carry out basic maintenance of the garden machinery. Generally, the gardens are maintained without the need for pesticides however, PA1 & PA6 qualifications would be useful for the control of weeds on the hard surfaces.

We are a small personable team dedicated to maintaining gardens with excellent horticultural standards within a 40-50 minute radius of Solihull. We focus on maintaining the borders, planting and overall planning and improvement of the garden to get the best results all year round. We ensure that gardens are pruned correctly at the right time of year, annual gardening tasks are carried out and the garden evolves to be better every year.

The business has two branches - garden design and garden maintenance - meaning that the role is varied and that we are involved with a host of exciting projects. We have close links to landscapers and mowing contractors so though small, we are able to work together with others to plan and maintain larger gardens.

Job summary:

We are looking for a passionate, personable and knowledgeable horticulturalist to maintain and improve a collection of privately owned gardens and small estates to a high standard.

The role will require a real drive and desire to deliver quality garden services to high-end residential houses. A hands-on and bright attitude is required to fit into the company culture and a thirst for knowledge to continue progressing within the role.

When working independently or with a colleague, you will take full responsibility of a van and tools, taking the lead in the decision-making for each gardening visit.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • To work under direct supervision of senior colleague/manager.
  • Be a people person, personable, well-mannered and presentable. This is particularly important as we deal with high-end clients
  • Full and clean UK driving license
  • Will be the responsibility of the employee to travel to/from jobs within approximately 30 mile radius of their home addresses (Dependant on home address location.)

(a)        Professional Skills:

  • To have Horticultural qualification(s)
  • To have a sound plant knowledge over a range of plant groups
  • To have theory and practical skill in hedge trimming and topiary (with plant health as the main priority)
  • To have good knowledge and practical skill in pruning and training plants (with plant health as the main priority)
  • To have good knowledge (including plants required) and practical skill in planting up, maintenance and watering of seasonal containers. (including plants required)
  • To have theory and practical skill in lawn maintenance
  • To have theory and knowledge of fruit tree pruning
  • To have knowledge vegetable growing
  • To have an overall good understanding of annual gardening tasks throughout the seasons
  • Confident with plant health and cross-contamination measures
  • Understanding of common pests and diseases with preventative and treatment methods.
  • Good knowledge of tools and how to use them effectively
  • To have an awareness of health and safety at work and adhere to safety procedures as necessary.
  • Proven experience using machinery.
  • The use and maintenance of hand tools and basic light machinery.
  • The use and care of cylinder and rotary mowers, hedgecutters, strimmers and leaf blowers
  • The use of larger tractor mowers and John Deere Gator or similar- at some jobs
  • Adjustments of mower height and quality of cut, etc. Oil level checks and checks for damage to any mower.
  • To ensure all equipment, machinery and buildings are secure
  • To manage own delegated work load independently.
  • Adhere to administration procedures promptly (such as timesheets, annual and bank holiday forms) and relay information to manager as required
  • Report any damaged equipment, any potential hazard and regularly check PPE and first aid box.
